A 2-year-old child found a loaded handgun at a Phillipsburg playground Sunday afternoon and police are asking for the help in determining how it got there.

The child’s father was able to safely grab the gun and called police to the Firth playground at Bates and Marshall Streets, police said.

“I couldn’t imagine it,” Phillipsburg police Lt. John Maczko said. “Thankfully, nothing happened.”

Police have not determined who left the gun on the playground or if the gun was legally registered to anyone.

Officers plan to study camera footage from nearby homes, police said.
